Grover Fugate, 87, a man of profound faith, wisdom, and kindness, departed from this world on Thursday, March 7, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, Grover's journey through life was one marked by dedication to his family, his country, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
After bravely serving as an Army veteran and skilled rifle marksman, Grover returned to civilian life with the same commitment and integrity that defined his military service. His work ethic was unwavering, and as a proud Teamster, he stood in solidarity with his fellow workers, upholding the values of fairness and camaraderie.
Grover's passion for sports was a thread that ran through his entire life. An avid 300 bowler, he could often be found perfecting his strikes and spares at the local bowling alley. His love for the Cincinnati Reds was as steadfast as his support for the Cincinnati Bengals and the University of Kentucky sports teams. Win or lose, Grover's loyalty never wavered, and his enthusiasm was infectious.
His interest in the thrill of chance led him to enjoy the slot machines at the boat, where he would spend time hoping for the lucky pull. Yet, it was the time spent with family and friends during these outings that he treasured the most.
Grover's life was enriched by the love and companionship of his special friend, Shirley Combs, who stood by his side through thick and thin. He was a loving brother to Pauline and Oral. His ride or die buddy, Eddie Allen, was always there for laughter and support. Grover's numerous nephews and nieces will remember him fondly as a guiding presence in their lives.
His heart never fully recovered from the loss of his infant daughter, Shirleen, and his beloved wife, Shirley Ann, along with several of his siblings who preceded him in death. Their memories remained a source of comfort and strength throughout his life.
Grover Fugate's legacy is one of unwavering love, steadfast faith, and the kind of wisdom that only comes from a life well-lived. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
