James Odell McCowan, 63, Covington (originally from Bellevue, OH) passed away on Friday March 29, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Hospice in Edgewood. He was born in Monroe, Michigan and was a welder by trade. His mother and father Otis and Evelyn McCowan and brother Bobby McCowan predeceased him. James served his country in the Vietnam conflict from 1968-1970 and earned the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge and Marksmanship Badge during his service. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, was a member of the Bellevue, OH VFW and loved cats. His family described him as a man who “lived his life on his own terms” and died on Vietnam Veterans Day. James is survived by his daughters Manda Burkett, Bellevue, OH, Jennifer (Jonathon) Nuttall, Grayson, KY, Rene Hatlay Ridgway, Clyde, OH, his sons Jason T. Short, Covington, KY, Joshua McCowan, Monticello, GA, and Richard Hatlay, Clyde, OH, brothers Samuel O. (Kathy) McCowan, Monticello, GA, Larry K. (Janice) McCowan, Bellevue, OH, George H. (Cathy) McCowan, Willard, OH, Kenny F. (Lavonne Kuhns) McCowan, Reedtown, OH, longtime friend Ruth McCowan, Sandusky, OH and 13 grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and will be added to the Alliance Funeral Home and Cremation Center website when that information becomes available.
