Melvin (Red) Brandenburg, 78, a former member of Roofers Local 42 and self-made business owner, passed away at Hospice Care of St. Elizabeth in Edgewood, KY on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. He was the owner and sole proprietor of Mel's Roofing which operated in the tri-state area for many years. He dedicated his professional life to providing top notch roofing services at a reasonable price. Even though he had not been able to climb up on a roof for the last 2 years or so, and was very ill, he always longed to get back up on the roof and work. In his mind he was going back to work "tomorrow". Red was born in Beattyville Kentucky in 1941 the son of George Lincoln Todd and Lula Brandenburg Newman, brother Jimmy Brandenburg and grandson Jeremy Fulmer who preceded him in death. He is survived by four children, Tina Haley, Bill Brandenburg, Doug Brandenburg and Roger Dale Smith. He leaves behind four sisters, Willena Miller of Cincinnati, Josephine Hoerlin Harms of Florence, Geraldine Pearson of Florence and Laverna Kleinberg (Albert Kleinberg) of Burlington, 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Melvin (Red) Brandenburg was a friend to all that he met. He was quick to lend a helping hand to those in need, even sometimes at a great cost to himself. It was said by a neighbor of his that he would go buy groceries and give them to some people living in a wooded area close to his apartment, simply because he knew that they needed them. He was also a lover of all animals. It was quite common to see small bowls of food and breadcrumbs scattered on his back patio. As he would say to feed the birds. On Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 12:00 PM-2:00 PM Red's friends and family will gather to remember him at Alliance Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Florence. A Celebration of Life will start at 2:00 PM. Friends wishing to share a fond memory or maybe a funny story of this unique character are not only welcome but encouraged to do so at the service. PLEASE NOTE: TEMPERATURES WILL BE TAKEN, HAND SANITIZER AVAILABLE AND MASKS ARE REQUIRED TO BE WORN CORRECTLY. His family honored his request to be cremated and be buried Lee County, Kentucky. Burial will be a private family affair. His wishes as told to many in the family were to be buried under a tree in Lee County Kentucky. A tree that he planted himself near the house that he grew up in as a small child.
